Jimmy Price, founder of Virginia Lime Works and Price Masonry Contractors, will be offering a 3 day workshop in Madison Heights, Virginia on July 24-26, 2018. Jimmy’s work and knowledge of the production of building lime from oyster shell and the conservation of historic masonry is respected around the world. These workshops will be limited to 7 participants to allow for one on one instruction.

 

Schedule

Day 1

8:30-9:00         Introduction

9:00-10:00       Participants questions / needs or specific concerns

10:00-12:00     Review/ discussion of above concerns

12:00-1:00       Lunch

1:00-2:30         Evaluate and inspection of historic masonry, failure mode of historic masonry and early repairs

2:30-3:30         Explore three cases of collapse in historic buildings during repair and what happened

3:30-4:30         How to read a building and inspect them safely

 

Day 2

8:30-9:30         Discussion of different historic mortars that were used, regional and geographic location in the country

9:30-12:00       How to prepare various the historic mortars as discussed

12:00-1:00       Lunch

1:00-2:00         How and why different mortars perform differently and why certain protective and decorative treatments were used in historic masonry ( I call the missing link in historic masonry) !! And how to adapt to the present situation

2:00-4:30         Beginning of hands on repointing

Tools that can be used , process and approach, prepping of wall and beginning of cutting out and prepping of joints

Day 3

8:30-12:00       Controlling absorption rate, hands on repointing and the different joint details that can be encountered and how to achieve

12:00-1:00       Lunch

1:00-3:30         Continue of repointing and details

3:30-4:30         Wrap up questions and discussion of work performed

Since workshops and conferences fill quickly, please sign up as early as possible. If you need to withdraw from an event, you must inform the organizer in writing via email info@ptn.org.

Cancellations more than 30 days prior to an event will be fully refunded less a $30 administrative fee. No refunds will be available for cancellations within 30 days of the event
